Day 34: Jackson Pollock's splattered world!

Posted by Andréa Couture on

It's the weekend, which means that 4Cats Arts Studios everywhere are celebrating birthday parties! We have so much fun creating with you all, getting messy, and celebrating your birthday, weekends are truly an awesome time in the studio!

Today I wanted to feature one of our popular birthday party and the artist it is inspired by: the Splatter Party (for adults, check out this link)! The Splatter parties are based on Jackson Pollock's Abstract Expressionist giant paintings!

Jackson, also nicknamed Action Jackson or Jack The Dripper, was an expert at splatter painting, and was the first one to start doing them!

His paintings were HUGE! He worked on un-stretched canvas, directly on the ground, just like we do!

Here is a picture of one of his giant masterpiece called Autumn Rhythm:

What do you think of some of our 4Cats artists' inspired version?

They make gorgeous masterpieces!

But they also make an incredible mess—which is why it is best to do it in our studios, and not at your house! 😉

Check out what Pollock's studio floor looked like:

Not sure it'd go too well if I made my floors look like those... 😬 Which reminds me, do you know how Jackson Pollock first discovered splatter painting?

Jackson was working with one of his friend from Mexico and experimenting with a bunch of different types of paint on giant canvases—we're talking wall size! And then, by accident, Pollock spilled a whole can of paint on the canvas! He felt super bad, but then when they looked at it, it looked cooler than he thought! And that got the artist thinking about his art in a completely different way... And finally, he started trying out splatter painting! We're super happy for this happy accident, and the legacy it has left us! 😄

How long?

The art portion of the party lasts a full hour of creating! Our curators will be showing you all the step by steps, guiding you through the project and making sure that you and your guests are having a great time.

Then, if you want, you can opt in for 45 minutes of studio space after for the party portion of your event, which comes at an extra fee. You can use the space to unwrap presents, share a snack, eat cake, etc.

What is included?

  • Materials for the art

  • 10 guests, including the birthday child

  • Each kid creates their own mini splatter painting

  • Everyone works on a large collaborative piece for the guest of honour

  • Curator for the hour of making

  • The awesome memories!

What about upgrades?

The paintings are completed on a large sheet of cartridge paper. But, you can choose some of our awesome upgrades in your party choices!

Check your local studio for pricing. Here are your options:

  • On a 9x12 canvas board

  • On an 11x14 pre-stretched canvas

  • You can also get your large painting stretched onto a gallery style frame! At 4Cats we stretch your artwork gallery-wrap style on 1.5" deep stretcher bars. With a gallery-wrap, the artwork is wrapped around the sides of the frame and stapled on the back. This means no frame is required, it's ready to hang! (Please note: splatter painting shown in video is not the actual size of the collaborative painting, it's much larger!)

Have more than 10 guests? No problem-o. You also have the option to have more than 10 guests. Check your local studio for pricing.

What should I bring?

  • Clothes that are okay to get messy in

  • If you are reserving the 45 minutes of party time, then you will need your food, snacks, cutlery, activities, etc.

  • No need for decorations - our studios are already super bright and colourful!

We can't wait to party with you in the studio!
