Workshop Details

learn to hand-build your own stoneware clay tumbler with decorative patterns following instructions

this tumbler has a beautiful design with floral and checkered patterns

please note tumblers must be created as designed to decrease the chances of firing issues & damaging yours & other pieces

timeline:

for the first 15 minutes, the demonstration instructor will introduce the project & tools & provide basic building steps (be sure to listen, these instructions are important 🤫)

next, you will then have approximately 30 minutes to create the basic build while socializing or relaxing

during this 30 minute build period, an instructor will check in with you every once in a while to help you with tips & techniques

but if you need them, feel free to raise your hand for help 🙋‍♀️ & they will come over asap

but! if you are a member & have done this before, feel free to say "i got this" & the instructor will only come around when you raise your hand

next, when you are ready (after approximately 30 mins), raise your hand for the final steps

after the final steps are complete, you will have a few minutes to smooth out your project

a few days later, we will bisque fire your piece in our kiln once it's dried

book your return glazing (painting) visit 14 days after your initial building class (the glazing is not included in the price of the build & needs to be booked separately - click here)

14 days after glazing, your piece will be ready for pick up!

Timeline

1. Build & Sculpt: 1 hour of instruction. Create using our high fire clay and we will dry and fire the clay in the kiln.

2. Glaze: Return to the studio to add the beautiful glazes. Book at least 14 days after your build date. We recommend booking 1 hour, depending on the amount of detail :)

3. Pick Up: We will fire it again in the kiln. In approximately 14 days after glazing, it’ll be ready for pickup.

Materials: Stoneware clay, underglazes, high fire clear glaze

Stoneware Clay 101

The most important thing to remember when working with clay is to relax and enjoy the process of making hand made art! Clay is like magical mud for creating fantastic pottery and cool ceramics. First, you shape it into whatever you want. Then it has to air dry and go into a super-hot oven called a kiln, where it gets fired at really high temperatures (around 1,200°C!). After it’s been fired once it’s ready for the colourful and clear glazes! Finally. it gets fired again to cure the glazes to the clay.
